  1. Yes, although we could sustain the human species without books, there wouldn't be any progression. Many of the accomplishments of the modern world came from books, and with the imagination of those who read them, because they are the most efficient way of teaching future generations. We could rely on the elders of society to teach future generations, but that knowledge would get lost through translations, similar to the telephone game. So yes I agree with you in the sense that we could sustain ourselves, but we wouldn't be living any different than our ancestors who hunted and gathered to survive.
