This chapter of Les Mis was quite sad you could say, it mainly focuses on Jean's background. Jean's had a rough life, his parents died when he was young and was then raised by his sister along with her seven children. Then his sister's husband dies as well, this leaves Jean to fill in the provider role which he does unenthusiasticaly. Time passes and they are hungry, so what other option does Jean have but to steal some bread? He is caught and jailed. All for the crime of wanting to eat. The last he heard of his sister, she only had one child left whom often suffer cold while his mother worked. It is unknown what happened to the rest of the children. Jean's suffered a lot and as long as people continue to suffer like Jean, Les Miserables will be of use to the world.
