Les Mis Today

Les Misérables and my world may be quite different in settings, people, and time but many of our beliefs are remarkably similar. I guess humanity will always keep fighting for these things as long as there is suffering. Like in Les Mis, the people in my world want to fight against tyranny, to end the suffering that they have been struggling through, end regimes that abuse them. Another thing that happens in Les Mis that still happens today is charity, but not to help, rather benefit yourself. People today donate for reputation, people back then donated to enter heaven. Just like people always have done, the religious are putting all their trust into God. The Bishop fully believed that God would protect his home, the people today fully believe God will protect them from the pandemic. Lastly, in Les Mis, we are told many apprentices do not study under the Bishop because although he is kind, he will not help them “climb the ladder” so to say. The Bishop is avoided and treated like an outcast. People today are also rejected from social circles if they are perceived to not offer any value or help to others “climb the ladder” as well. I guess without even realizing it, we reflect the stories that are told, and, in this case, we are a reflection of Les Misérables.
