MSS Part 2

1. What is the difference between a sign and a symbol?

A sign is something that is means something but a symbol means something on purpose and often everyone understands what the symbol means.

2. What are the three elements of the symbolic relationship (the "blue triangle of meaning")?

The three elements of the symbolic relationship are symbols, referents, and you.

3. Is a word a sign or a symbol? Why?

A word is a symbol to which society has given an agreed meaning.

4. Describe one natural sign that you've seen in the world.

One natural sign I've seen in the world is steam on a hiking trail, this usually means there are natural hot springs nearby.

5. Describe one symbol you've seen in the world. What (referent) did it stand for? How did you know what it meant?

One symbol I've seen in the world is a bold red "N". It stood for Netflix and I knew what it meant because that is the company's logo and has been used in the advertisements for Netflix.
